Everyone has rules that guide their lives, whether they know it or not. It can be a meaningful exercise to get them down on paper, so that one can reflect on them. They can also be a reasonable measure of one’s ideals and in some ways stand as a description of your self.
Here’s my rules (so far).
Everyone has rules that guide their lives, whether they know it or not. It can be a meaningful exercise to get them down on paper, so that one can reflect on them. They can also be a reasonable measure of one’s ideals and in some ways stand as a description of your self.
Here’s my rules (so far).
- Everything matters, all the time.
Actually, this one has been around in various versions for a long time. The earliest version appears to be by Marcus Aurelius (121-180): “And thou wilt give thyself relief, if thou doest every act of thy life as if it were the last.” - Always have a Plan B.
- Always have an Exit Strategy.
- Always do project management in Fahrenheit: no matter how long you think it will take, or how much it will cost, double it and add 30.
- Privacy is a dark shadow in which unscrupulous persons can safely go about their business.
- Each new “policy” is really just a new set of loopholes through which unscrupulous persons can take advantage of others.
- Apologies are just requests for permission to do something bad again. Don’t apologize; instead, change your behaviour.
- Never offer an opinion if you're not willing to go to the wall for it.
- Never attribute to malice that which can be explained by sheer stupidity. Or sloth.
- Never say never.
- Let your record be your reputation.
- Possessions don’t matter unless they help you do something meaningful.
- Don’t let others rush you.
- Have goals, but jettison them whenever better ones come along.
- Never let the future get in the way of the present. Corollary: give up on expectations.
- Avoid financial and emotional debt at all costs.
- You can’t fake cool. Corollary: If you need to try to be cool, you won’t succeed.
- You can’t motivate anyone but yourself. Corollary: don’t try to motivate others.
- Don’t follow the crowd unless they all just happen to be going your way.
- You’re not that important; don’t obsess about the things you miss, but revel in what you catch.
- Failures are more valuable than successes.
- Don’t fear mistakes; instead, fear not making them.
- Competition and collaboration are like yin & yang. You wouldn’t notice one without the other.
- When you feel pleasure, question why.
- Anger comes from confusion and frustration.
- No matter what you think, there’s someone who thinks just the opposite. Give them the benefit of the doubt till you know who’s right.
- Always question your assumptions.
- Parents never know what they’re doing.
- There’s always something better.
- Science works.
- The whole notion of “god” is a bad idea.
- Moderation in everything – including moderation itself.
- Hope for the best; prepare for the worst, and don't be surprised that neither actually happen.
- The only thing you can control is your self.
- Design is an avoidance tactic.
- Do it right, not fast.
- Silence gives consent.
- There are no slippery slopes, only slippery people.
