Sustainability challenges require a reorganization of patterns of production and consumption, and, restructuring of institutions and organizations in the local, regional and global scale. New business models, bottom up initiatives and governance innovations all hold potential to contribute to sustainability. The contribution of design research in this field is broadening as systemic and strategic innovation has become a prominent topic. Moreover, design has a particular role in initiating and supporting such reorganization and restructuring. Potential scope of PhD proposals in the area of sustainability transformation include studies of the use of infrastructure services including energy, water and transport, food provision, new organizational models, and self-organization of issue-driven activist groups. Theoretical approaches can be connected to sustainability transitions, practice theory, self-organizing systems, futures studies.
Aalto University is looking for a post-graduate students to work on her/his Doctor of Arts (DA) degree at Aalto ARTS (Aalto University, School of Arts, Design, and Architecture), Department of Design. Before hired, the candidates must first pass the general selection of doctoral students in the department of design, for which you can find the guidance below.
Full time doctoral students are expected to complete their DA in four years, during which they should complete their DA thesis and doctoral studies, participate in research projects around their topic area, and teach relevant courses. The monthly salary will be according to the Aalto salary system, depending on the candidate’s expertise and tasks, from 2050€ upwards. The duration of position is 24 months and the posts can also be partitioned to shorter term ones the call is open to both existing and new students to Department of Design.
