Workshop: Systems Design Thinking at DCC 2018 (Jul 2018, Como, Italy)

Date: 1 July 2018
Location: Politecnico di Milano, Lecco Campus, Lake Como (near Milan), Italy
Website: SDT Workshop
Deadline for submissions: 25 May 2018

'Design thinking' and 'engineering systems thinking' have been typically considered as two complementary but distinct approaches to understanding engineering design processes. These two concepts have been explored mostly in isolation from one another. Design thinking methods have been applied in engineering design and product development, while engineering systems thinking methods have been applied in professional systems engineering practice for large-scale, complex systems design. 'Systems Design Thinking' (SDT) is the integration of these two approaches. The workshop will offer a forum for sharing academic and professional perspectives on systems thinking and design thinking; identifying similarities, differences, and opportunities for knowledge sharing and collaboration between the two communities; and, defining SDT in a more complete way along with emerging research directions. Tangible outcomes of the workshop will be a collection of papers to be published as a Thematic Collection (similar to a special issue) in the Design Science Journal (DSJ).

Submission information:
Participants do not need to submit anything to attend the workshop.

Participants who wish to be considered as panelists must submit a title and extended abstract (approx. 1000-1500 words with 10-15 sample references) to systemsdesignthinking@umich.edu by 25 May 2018. Topics should be related to systems thinking or design thinking research or their integration, and how systems and design thinking are applied in practice in real engineering projects and organizations. The workshop committee will select or suggest integration of presentations and time allocated to provide a balance of topics and will inform the participants of their selection by 8 June 2018.

Participants may also submit questions for the panel. Moderator-curated questions will open the discussion section of the first session. Additional questions and discussion topics will be decided at the workshop in real time.

Workshop format:
¼ hour: Introduction
2 hours: Up to 6 x 10 min presentations followed by 10 min discussion focussed on presentation
1 hour: Group discussion focussed on workshop goals
¼ hour: Wrap up

All attendees at the workshop need to register either as an addition to the DCC'18 conference registration at a cost of €30, or if not registered for the conference at a cost of €60. Please go the DCC'18 Registration page to add this workshop to your registration.
