Dates: 6-8 Nov 2020
Location: Hamilton Wood Type & Printing Museum, Two Rivers, Wisconsin, USA
Website: Wayzgoose 2020
Deadline for proposals: 1 April 2020
The “Wayzgoose” is a traditional feast that a master printer sponsored for his staff. The concept has carried on in contemporary culture as a conference or festival for the printing arts. This year APHA is joining the Hamilton Wood Type & Printing Museum’s annual Wayzgoose. We will explore common themes shared by our organizations, including the study of printing history, letterpress and other processes, lettering, graphic design, typography, papermaking, and fine printing.
The Hamilton venue, as the largest wood type museum in North America, will provide special opportunities for speakers to explore the themes of xylography, wood type design, and manufacturing. Its expansive collections of display type and billboard blocks also invite investigations into the early origin of advertising design. Surrounded by 19th- and early 20th- century machinery, speakers are encouraged to delve into areas of print culture including, but not limited to: technological innovations, models of regional printing, and the physical effects of the craft. This theme also sets the stage to investigate the historical roots of the Wayzgoose tradition itself.
Opportunities are available for teaching workshops using the Hamilton Wood Type & Printing Museum’s multiple cylinder and sign presses, as well as an unparalleled teaching collection of hundreds of fonts of wood type.
Hamilton workshop equipment list:
❡ Large classroom space with 12 Showcard-style sign presses
❡ 10 cabinets of wood type in a variety of styles ranging from 1/2" to 8" tall
❡ Press room space featuring 5 Vandercook presses
❡ 2 iron hand presses ideal for printing wood engravings
❡ Studio space available for calligraphy, sign painting, & lettering
❡ Limited capability for papermaking
