Inaugural Canadian Design Workshop (Jul 2020, Waterloo, Canada)

The theme of the inaugural workshop is Designing Engineering Design Education in Canada. 

In alignment with the workshop theme, submissions are expected to fall under the following topics:

  1. Engineering design in the Canadian public post-secondary education system
    • Development of engineering design knowledge and skills, including related professional skills 
    • The “invisible” engineering curriculum which includes tacit design knowledge; procedural knowledge; and common components and reference designs 
    • Design education at scale: the impact of large classes on engineering design education 
    • Drawing connections from design research to design education 
    • Scholarship of teaching and learning and design education 
    • Exploration of methods in design practice, teaching, and research 
    • The role and impact of engineering accreditation requirements 
    • The role and impact of teaching stream faculty on engineering design education
  2. Diversity in engineering design 
    • Implications of Canadian geography and ethnography on engineering design and designers: The diverse landscape of engineering design education, impact of regionality in design 
    • Indigenous cultures and approaches. 
    • Women in engineering design education and practice; responding to Engineers Canada’s 30 by 30 call to action 
    • Disciplinarity in design: how do different engineering disciplines teach, research, and practice engineering design? 
    • Product versus process design and the implications for design education
  3. Design in Canadian industry: Industry segments, concerns, and applications
    • Transitions from industry to academia, and academia to industry 
    • Design and entrepreneurship 
    • Design practices in industry

Participation at the workshop 
Attendees are invited to (co-)author one or more contributions.  Participation by attendees will be in the form of podium or poster sessions, grouped by theme.  Authors are invited to state their preference for presentation format in their extended abstract submission. Submitting authors will also be required to review one other abstract submission.

At the conclusion of the workshop, participants will receive a preliminary proceedings containing near-final manuscripts of all presented papers. After the workshop, authors of selected papers and posters will be invited to submit extended versions of their papers to a Special Issue of the International Journal of Engineering Education. These submissions will be subjected to further peer review.
